SuperDroid Success Story

SuperDroid Robots started in 2001 and grew into a small, yet well-known robotics company with customers across the globe and several enterprise customers. In May 2022, REX Technology Solutions acquired SuperDroid Robots when the husband and wife founders retired.

Challenge

When REX acquired SuperDroid, the company’s business model focused on building one-off custom robots, creating low-margin robot kits, and reselling inexpensive robot parts – this model was hardly profitable and not scalable. The company operated as a transactional, e-commerce storefront with 250+ robot models. The business model needed to be flipped to scalable product lines that had sustainable profit margins.

Solution

Perryn, as REX Technology’s Chief Marketing Officer, helped steer the company’s realignment to scalability and profitability. (Note: Perryn still works with SuperDroid Robots as their fractional CMO.)

He worked with SuperDroid’s team to understand their key market sectors, sales history, and opportunities, and collaborated with their new CEO/product owner to focus on six product pillars. Additionally, he utilized the company’s history of building highly durable robots with less flashy designs to reposition the company as “Robots That Work”; which also pushed against an industry known for PR stunts with dancing robots.

His marketing team build a new, education-first website that allowed visitors to easily find their ideal robot by industry, usage, or feature. The team built stronger relationships digitally by incorporating fun into their social media with robot jokes, coloring pages, silly holiday posts like the “12 Days of Robots” for Christmas, and a March Madness-style robot bracket challenge.

Perryn also built out the sales infrastructure by hiring the company’s first business developer in their 20+ years history, built out their CRM and sales process, and brought in several cost-efficient sales and marketing tools to identify and contact prospective clients. The business developer and Perryn developed tradeshow game plans, a global reseller program, and a monthly “road show” so prospective buyers could see, touch, and operate the robots.

Results

After the predicted sales slump in the first year post-acquisition as the company realigned its focus and profit centers, the company matched its previous gross income within 24 months but in more profitable market sectors with higher value purchases. SuperDroid is now focused on highly scalable solutions for key market sectors, including construction, tactical (law enforcement), and manufacturing.
